Not me addressing at our technical chums, but the title of an article in the CILIP Library & Information Gazette, 20 April - 3 May 2007.
Essentially a report on a Wi-Fi conference held last month (London, naturally) it contains the following passage which possibly confirms (but should also allay) the fears of our friends in IT places.
Glasgow (libraries), where there were worries about security, set up a separate network to prevent the risk of unauthorised hacking. But adopting the technology for the city's library branches created a city-wide hot-spot, a boost to economic regeneration...
Personally I question the need for a discrete network, but solutions can be found. Why do we always seem to be, dare I say it, feart?
2 further points. Copies of the article available on request from the library. Does Glasgow allow authorised hacking?
Why fear Wi-fi when it offers so much?
